The Atlantic coastline allows an abundance of freshly caught seafood from swordfish to sardines to appear on menus throughout the country. You should also try to sample the national dish of "cozido" made with beef and cabbage, and grilled steak "bife à Portuguesa".
Port and Madeira wines are unique to the country, and there are plenty of local producers where you can sample these distinctive sweet wines.

The Algarve - On the southernmost coast of Portugal, the Algarve is a popular destination, with a wealth of water sports, famous golf courses, picturesque holiday resorts and an exciting nightlife.

Faro - the baroque church of Igreja do Carmo has a chapel decorated with the skeletons of monks, or take a boat trip to one of Faro's islands.

Lisbon - offering a real mix of historical buildings and vibrant city atmosphere, there's plenty to see, including the Museu Do Azalejo devoted to the tiles which are typical of Portugal. There are plenty of places to stop for a refreshing drink beside the river.

Porto - the medieval city of Porto is home to a vibrant open-air market where you can stock up on olives and local cheeses. Wander the winding streets of the "ribiera" (riverbank) region before heading to the Porto wine cellars to sample the famous sweet wine.
